Supporting the emotional wellbeing of new and expectant mothers, the HSE’s Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Services offer expert, multidisciplinary support across all maternity hospitals in Ireland. Aimed at women with moderate to severe mental health challenges during pregnancy or within the first year postpartum, the service—staffed by psychiatrists, midwives, psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists—ensures compassionate, accessible care in antenatal clinics, maternity wards, or even via video calls where needed. Referrals can be made by your GP, midwife, obstetrician, or psychiatrist, and are a step up from the essential but more general support available from GPs and public health nurses.
