The Irish National War Memorial Gardens

The Irish National War Memorial Gardens

FREE ADMISSION

The Irish National War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge offer a tranquil outdoor experience for families seeking a blend of nature, history, and reflection. Designed by renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, the gardens feature sunken rose gardens, herbaceous borders, and extensive tree planting, creating a serene atmosphere ideal for leisurely walks and family picnics.

Children can explore the spacious lawns, observe the diverse plant life, and enjoy the open spaces. The gardens are dedicated to the memory of 49,400 Irish soldiers who died in World War I, with their names recorded in the beautifully illustrated Harry Clarke manuscripts housed in the granite bookrooms.

While the gardens are primarily a place of remembrance, they also provide an opportunity for families to engage in discussions about history and heritage in a peaceful setting. Admission is free, and the gardens are open year-round, with guided tours available on Wednesdays from April to October.
